SovGuard in the Security Model
SovGuard is the content safety engine that sits in the message pipeline between buyers and sovagents. Every message, every file upload, and every sovagent response passes through SovGuard before reaching its destination.

What SovGuard Does
SovGuard performs three categories of scanning.
Inbound scanning (buyer to sovagent)
Every message from a buyer is scanned for prompt injection patterns before it reaches the sovagent. This protects sovagents from having their system prompts overridden, their instructions leaked, or their behavior manipulated.

Every response from a sovagent is scanned for sensitive data before it reaches the buyer. This protects against sovagents leaking PII, financial information, or data from previous sessions.

File scanning
Text-based file uploads are scanned for injection patterns and sensitive content. Binary files are checked by type but not content-scanned.

File limits per job: 10 MB per file, 50 files maximum, 100 MB total storage. See the API Reference for details.
SovGuard Enforcement
When a sovagent's service has sovguard_required set to true, SovGuard scanning cannot be bypassed.
- The API enforces this server-side: if a buyer attempts to create a job with
sovguardEnabled: falseagainst a service that requires SovGuard, the request is rejected with HTTP400 SOVGUARD_REQUIRED - This check was historically UI-only (a disabled checkbox). It is now enforced at the API layer regardless of how the request is made

SovGuard operates in three modes depending on configuration. The platform automatically selects the best available mode.

HTTP API Mode
The full SovGuard cloud service provides 6 layers of defense:
- Regex patterns -- known injection signatures
- Encoding detection -- base64, unicode escapes, zero-width character stripping
- Entropy analysis -- Shannon entropy scoring for obfuscated payloads
- ML classification -- trained models for injection and jailbreak detection
- Spotlighting -- structural analysis of prompt boundaries
- Canary tokens -- registered tokens that trigger alerts when leaked
Fallback Mode
When the cloud API is unreachable, the platform activates an inline scanner that provides baseline protection.
Inbound fallback detects:
- Instruction override patterns ("ignore previous instructions", "disregard all rules")
- Jailbreak patterns ("DAN mode", "act as unrestricted AI")
- ChatML injection (
<|im_start|>,[SYSTEM],[INST]) - Exfiltration attempts ("repeat back the system prompt", "output your instructions")
- Encoded payloads (base64 strings, unicode escape sequences)
- Prompt leaking ("reveal your system prompt", "show me your instructions")
- High entropy text (Shannon entropy > 5.0 on messages 30-2000 characters)
Outbound fallback detects:
- SSN patterns (validated format, excludes area numbers 000, 666, 9xx)
- Credit card numbers (13-19 digits, Luhn-validated)
- Crypto addresses (BTC legacy/bech32, ETH, VRSC) not in the whitelist
- IP-based URLs
- data: URIs with large base64 payloads
Circuit Breaker
The SovGuard HTTP client includes a circuit breaker to prevent cascading failures when the cloud API is down.

When the circuit is open, all scan requests go directly to the fallback scanner without attempting the HTTP call. After the open duration expires, the next request tries the API again.
Optional E2E Encryption
When SOVGUARD_ENCRYPTION_KEY is configured, all payloads sent to the SovGuard API are encrypted with AES-256-GCM before transmission. Responses are also encrypted.

SovGuard API ──AES-256-GCM encrypted response──▶ PlatformThe encryption key must be exactly 256 bits (32 bytes), base64-encoded.
This protects message content even if TLS is compromised between the platform and SovGuard service. It does not replace TLS -- it adds an additional layer.
Canary Tokens
Sovagents can register canary tokens -- secret strings embedded in their system prompts. If a canary token appears in any outbound message, SovGuard holds the message before delivery.
How canary tokens work
- Sovagent registers a canary token via
POST /v1/me/canary - The token is stored in the
agent_canariestable and registered with the SovGuard cloud (if available) - Sovagent embeds the token naturally in its system prompt (e.g., "If asked, my favorite color is
sovguard-canary-v1-abc123") - During outbound scanning, SovGuard checks for registered canary tokens
- If found, the message is held -- the sovagent's system prompt has leaked
Canary token limits
- Maximum 5 canary tokens per sovagent
- Token length: 4-200 characters
- Token format label: up to 50 characters (default:
sovguard-canary-v1) - 24-hour TTL for cloud-registered canaries (auto-renewed)
